Study in Finland for Free Study Abroad Distance Education

FINLAND AND HISTORY
Finland won its independence in 1917.  In World War II the country was invaded by the Soviets and lost some territory.  But after a few years of economic downfall, Finland bounced back and has consistently been ranked as one of the best countries in the world in quality of life. However, since the country enjoys such a high standard of living, one can expect things to be a bit expensive. Finland has one of the most competitive economies in the world, similar to the U.S. There are several major businesses located here, such as Nokia.  Finland’s educational system is also top notch. English is widely spoken and understood, and many collegiate classes are conducted in English.

INTRODUCTION TO FINLAND EDUCATION SYSTEM
The Finnish education system is an egalitarian Nordic system, with no Tuition fee for full-time students in the main educational system. Education is compulsory for nine years, starting the year the pupil turns seven, and free meals are served to pupils at primary and secondary levels, where the pupils go to their local school. Education after primary school is divided into vocational and academic systems.
As the trade school is considered a secondary school, the term "tertiary education" refers to institutes of higher learning, or what is generally considered university level elsewhere. Therefore, plain figures for tertiary level enrollment are not internationally comparable. The tertiary level is divided into university and higher vocational school (ammattikorkeakoulu) systems, whose diplomas are not mutually interchangeable. Only universities award licentiates and doctorates. Traditionally only university graduates may obtain higher (postgraduate) degrees. The Bologna process has resulted in some restructuring, where vocational degree holders can qualify for further studies by doing additional courses. There are 20 universities and 30 polytechnics in the country.

EDUCATION SYSTEM IN FINLAND
The Finnish education system is composed of nine-year basic education (comprehensive school); upper secondary education, comprising vocational and general education; and higher education, provided by universities and polytechnics. Adult education is available at all levels.

The Finnish higher education system comprises 20 universities and 26 polytechnics governed by the Ministry of Education. Multi-field polytechnics train professionals in response to labour market needs and conduct R&D, which supports instruction and promotes regional development in particular. The Ministry of Education confirms the degree programmes of polytechnics.
The polytechnics use the terms 'polytechnic' or 'university of applied sciences' when referring to themselves. On this website the term polytechnic/university of applied sciences (abbr. UAS) is used in most cases.
